In 1973, Pandit began study at Columbia University at age 16. Three years later, he received a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, and the year after that a master's. In 1986 he received a Ph.D. in finance. Pandit joined Morgan Stanley as an associate in 1983. Seven years later, he was named head of Morgan Stanley's U.S. stock business. In 2000, he was named head of investment banking. In 2005 he left Morgan Stanley and a year later helped found a hedge fund, Old Lane. Citigroup bought the fund in April 2007 and fast-tracked him to replace Charles Prince as CEO in December of that year. After leading Citi through the financial crisis of 2008 and the tumultuous years that followed, Pandit resigned as CEO in October 2012.
